Study says exercising cancels out even heavy drinking

Some experts are skeptical

Drink a lot. Exercise a lot. You’re all good.

At least that’s what the results of a study released this week in the British Journal of Sports Medicine seem to indicate.

Exercising effectively cancels out the negative health impacts of even heavy drinking.

“I would love to believe it and I know the majority of the U.S. population would love to bleieve it, as well,” Brenda Rooney, epidemiologist at Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, said. “I’m cautious, however.”

She warns that the nature of the study means that other health-affecting factors weren’t considered separately from alcohol.

“It is an observational study,” Rooney said. “And there are many, many other studies that would not show that relationship.”

Rooney says moderation in drinking should still be considered the best way to go for any number of health reasons, including cancer, liver problems and diabetes, among others.

The study looked at thousands of adults and found a relationship between the recommended amount of weekly exercise and the elimination of the higher rates of all causes of early death associated with heavy drinking.
