Hoesley wins two state titles for Arcadia

A busy day for a pair from Holmen High School, pays off with a state championship.

Aaron Zmolek and Seth Holden competed in three events each Saturday at the Division 1 WIAA state track and field meet.

And, while they both medaled in their individual events, it was the 400-meter relay where they ended up on top of the podium.

Holden, Zmolek, Seth Wilson and Ryan Bennett took the crown with a 42.02-second run. Brookefield East, which had the fastest time to Holmen in Friday’s preliminaries, came in second (42.05).

Teammate Mason Kalander, who also competed in the 800, took fifth in the 1,600.

Onalaska’s Austin Glynn entered the discus with the second-highest qualifying mark, but the junior scratched on all three of his attempts.

On the girls side, Mason Kalander finished fifth in the 1,600 (5:02.35). She also competed in the 800 (14th – 2:20.49).

IN DIVISION 2, Aquinas Isiah Brown finished the runner-up in the 110 hurdles (15.0). Beating the senior was another senior, and defending state champ, Jim Hoesley (14.41).

Hoesley also finished the state champ in the 300 hurdles (38.41) and finished third in the 200 (21.93). Hoesley also finished the state champ in the 300 hurdles (38.41) and finished third in the 200 (21.93).

It’s the 32nd state title for Arcadia – three by Hoesley, who broke his own school records in both the 110 and 300 hurdles.

On the girls side for the Red Raiders, Abbey Zastrow came away with a state championship in the 400 (56.86). The junior also finished third in the 200 (25.78).

Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau’s Dana Feyen finished the runner-up in the 3,200 (10:49.39) and third in the 1,600 (5:04.97).

Westby’s Krista Hall finished third in the discus (125 feet, 7 inches).

IN DIVISION 3, Alma/Pepin’s Caiden Haake won the discus
and then some. The junior took first with a 170-10, while second place was 151-6. Haake also took 12th in the shot (45-8.75). 

Bangor’s Kellen Kravik (right) won the pole vault (15-0) and took eighth in the 300 hurdles (42.23).

Independence/Gilmanton’s Alex Grulkowski competed in four state finals, finishing fourth in the long jump (21-0) and sixth in the 200 (23.13). His 800-relay team also finished sixth (1:33.86).

Melrose-Mindoro’s Dominik Ummel won the 800 by a hundredth of a second, finishing in 1:56.1.

On the girls side, Ashlie Lockington won a title in the triple jump (37-1.5), while Cashton’s Jamie Schmitz won the triple jump by a quarter inch (37-1.5).

Cochrane-Fountain City’s 1,600 relay of Rylee Gabel, Hayley Duellman, Karen Scharlau, Abbey Engel took  second (4:07.5), while teammate Abbey Engel finished the runner-up in the 800 (2:16.15) and sixth in the 400 (59.75).
