Holmen native’s hit streak now at 49

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team is going back to the College World Series, after sweeping the Midwest Regional tournament this week at Copeland Park this week.

At 1:15 p.m. Friday at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, Wis., No. 4-ranked UW-L (38-8) will play third-ranked Trinity – a rematch of last year’s semifinals. In that matchup, UW-L lost 16-6, before coming back the next day to win 10-7 and move into the championship, where it was swept by SUNY Cortland.

Saturday, beyond the Eagles setting a new school record for wins – last year’s team had the previous record (36) – while dominating the regional, the story of the tournament continued to be Holmen, Wis., native Taylor Kohlwey’s hit streak.

It now sits at 49 games, after the senior went 2-for-5 – he extended the streak with a single in the first inning – as UW-L defeated Saint John’s 5-3 to move into the World Series.

“He’s good. He’s just good,” UW-L coach Chris Schwartz said earlier this week about Kohlwey. “He finds a way to put the barrel on the ball. Sometimes it ends up over the fence. Sometimes it ends up a dump over the shortstop’s head.

“There’s no way to get him out, consistently. There just isn’t.”

Kohlwey sits No. 2 all-time in Division III for consecutive games with a hit.

The record will stand at 60, set by Salve Regina’s Damian Costantino (2001-03). Kohlwey’s streak started in that 10-7 win against Trinity in the World Series semifinals last year.

The Eagles never trailed Saint John’s, but it was 2-2 – the first tie for UW-L in the tournament – heading into the third inning. That’s where designated hitter Alex Brown’s RBI single gave the Eagles the lead for good.

Caleb Boushley improved to 10-0 on the season, going 8.1 innings. He struck out five, walked one and give up two earned runs on eight hits. Brock Rude picked up the save.

Ben Morgan and Justin Anderson – who was named Most Outstanding Player of the regional – were both 2-for-4 for UW-L.
