Kleman at it again for the Rangers

MADISON, Wis. – It started the season the top-ranked team. It ended the season state champions.

The Logan High School softball team has brought home the first state championship in, not team, but school history for girls team sports.

Jordyn Kleman was, again, dominant in leading the Rangers on Saturday at Goodman Diamond. She struck out the side in the seventh inning to seal a 3-0 win over Waupun, getting Logan the WIAA Division 2 state championship.

Kleman struck out 11. She walked none. And the junior hit her second home run in as many games in leading the Rangers (28-1). Kleman finishes the season with 314 strikeouts in 159 innings and an ERA under .32.

Friday, she struck out 13, walked none, hit a two-run home run and an RBI double in the semifinal win over New London. Saturday, she made the most of her one official at-bat with the home run and also walked twice.

The homer – a lined shot to left field – in the fifth was insurance. Logan opened the scoring in the third inning when No. 9 hitter, Sydney Lamers, nailed a triple to left-center field. Alycia Larson knocked her in on the next at-bat with a double and eventually scored on a wild pitch with two outs.

Kleman gave up her first hit of the game in the fourth inning. She gave up another on a bunt single in the fifth, where Waupun (27-5) had runners at first and second. But Kleman got a strikeout to end the inning.

She gave up another hit in the seventh, but did strike out the side.

Waupun starter Megan Van Ruiswyk, who didn’t record a strikeout in the 5-4 win over No. 2 Beloit Larson, finished with five on Saturday. She gave up two walks and five hits, as well.
