Holmen, Logan remain unbeaten in blowouts

Logan High School football team gets a lot of recognition for its play-making ability on offense. Coach Casey Knoble, however, may be the first to tell you the backbone of the Rangers is their defense.

Friday, the defense kept the ship afloat until the offense started to figure things out in a 36-0 MVC win over Aquinas at UW-La Crosse.

After Kyle Bakalars scored on an 11-yard run midway through the first quarter, the Rangers’ offense couldn’t find the end zone again until the third quarter.

The score, of course, tells a tale of how well the defense played, however, and Aric Elmore put the team up 14-0 at halftime thanks to a 65-yard punt return off the bounce in the second quarter.

Coming out of halftime, the Logan (4-0, 3-0) offense found itself with three third-quarter scores – two by Bakalars on a 15-yard run and a punch in from the 1. Dylan Crocker had the other score and the defense never gave the Blugolds (1-3, 1-2) a chance. Aquinas has been outscored 67-7 in its last two games and 123-21 on the season.

Logan outgained the Blugolds 306-94, 255-65 on the ground. Bakalars had 13 carries for 99 yards, while Elmore took 9 carries for 106.

WEST SALEM 20, ONALASKA 14 (OT)

ONALASKA, Wis. — Tim Schauf put the Panthers on his back. It wasn’t just the 3-yard touchdown run in overtime that eventually won the game. It wasn’t the 17-yard pass to Trent Kastenschmidt to set up the game-winner.

The 6-foot-2, 185-pound junior quarterback also put his team on the scoreboard – down 14-0 at the time – late in the third quarter with a 14-yard pass to Mark Harris and then tied the game on a quarterback sneak with 7:31 remaining in regulation to force overtime.

Schauf finished, rushing for 93 yards on 21 carries, while going 9-for-17 for 83 yards in the air. Teammate Colin Haas had 136 yards on 27 carries for the unbeaten Panthers (3-0, 2-0).

The Hilltoppers (1-3, 1-1) were led by Alex Gumz’s 153 yards on 21 carries, including a 43-yard touchdown to give his team a 14-0 lead heading into halftime. After turnovers on its first two possessions, and getting stuffed at the 1-yard line on fourth down in the first quarter, Onalaska did get on the board when Ryan Williams hit Nate Sweeney streaking down the sidelines for 74 yards.

Turnovers lost it for the Hilltoppers. They fumbled six times, lost four of them, including to start overtime and the possession that led to the Panthers’ game-tying score in the fourth.

HOLMEN 60, TOMAH 14

TOMAH, Wis. — Another blowout, another Camryn Zimmerman show. The 6-foot, 172-pound Holmen quarterback scored four touchdowns and threw another just for good measure.

Zimmerman had four touchdowns last week (three rushing), but that took an entire half to accomplish. In this one, he needed just one quarter, scoring on runs of 6, 66, 3 and 7 yards out. His 57-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Koelbl put the Vikings up 38-0 nothing, before Chris Magnuson made it 46-0 at halftime.

Zimmerman finished with 95 yards rushing on 8 carries – he had 174 yards on 7 carries last week when the Vikings beat Aquinas 61-7 – and added 88 yards passing, going 3-for-4.

The Vikings (4-0, 2-0) have outscored opponents 148-21 the last three weeks, after a 14-13 win in Week 1 against Chippewa Falls (1-3).

Tomah finally got on the board early in the fourth quarter, only to see Holmen’s Seth Wilson take the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for the touchdown – his second touchdown of the night.
