Die Hards Brave The Cold For Racing

Wisconsin showed it's true colors over the weekend as we had hail, sleet, snow and rain all withing a 4 hour period Saturday. Friday night was just windy and cold. Keep race fans away? Heck No! Just bring some extra blankets, your winter coat and huddle around the hot chocolate. (Yes, add something to the hot chocolate after the races are done)

La Crosse Opener A Thrilling Ride!

King Of The Short Tracks. Steve Carlson. Another Saturday night win. I wonder if sports writers that cover racing, save their articles from past Carlson wins and just rearrange the words. Why would they do that you ask? Because he wins so much.

Racing Is Back!

The smell of racing fuel, the tastes of concession stands, the crack of a beer pop top and old friends reuniting with one another. Yes, racing is back in Western Wisconsin and it seems as though race fans were needing this for quite some time.

In talking with fans at the La Crosse Speedway and Mississippi Thunder Speedway the past 2 weekends, the opening of local tracks was a welcome sight. Though La Crosse took last weekend off, race fans in Fountain City grabbed their lawn chairs and settled in for a long night of dirt track racing. In it's fifth year now with owner Bob Timm at the reigns, close to 1000 fans packed into the 4 corner track, thanks in part to every dirt track in Minnesota still being snow covered. In the end, several drivers retained their spots from last season while some first place finishes were seen from others. And some ended up with a lot of garage time coming as there were a total of 7 rollovers.

Next up for Fountain City, a huge USMTS traveling series stop Friday night and the Iron Man B-mod's. At La Crosse, Saturday nigh, May 4th will see the return of racing with Late Models, Sportsmen, Thunderstocks and Outlawz! Gates open at 6 PM...and the action will start at 7:30.

Support your local race tracks and remember to always bring a friend!

Frostbuster Opens The Season At La Crosse

The La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway inaugural “Frostbuster” last Saturday night was just that......cold. But the racing was hot hot hot.

Former track champ. Mr. Saturday night J. Herbst was hanging back for a couple of laps, but with five to go he turned on the heat. He charged to the front and took the lead from Mike Carlson with three laps left. Herbst managed to capture the checkered flag in the NASCAR Late Models division. Mike Carlson finished second and Steve Carlson third with Brent Kirchner and last year's track champ, Todd Korish rounded out the top 5.

1, Shawn Pfaff, 19.570 seconds, 100.332 MPH;(NEW TRACK RECORD) 2, Brad Powell, 19.597 secs, 3, Cole Howland, 19.882 secs 4, J. Herbst, 19.938 5, Ty Majeski, 19.976

Heat 1 — 1, Brent Kirchner

Heat 2 — 1, Steve Carlson

Fast Dash — 1, J. Herbst

In the Sportsmen, Steve Bachman raced from the back of the field to win the feature. Bachman worked his way to the front quickly and passed Jimmy Crack Corn Gilster with seven laps to go. On the next lap he was side-by-side with Mark Challet and overpowered him one lap later. Gilster finished second, Bill Martin third, Jake Arneson fourth and Challet fifth.

1, Jake Arneson, 22.092

Heat 1 — 1, Brian Hesselberg

Heat 2 — 1, Bill Martin

The Thunderstocks came out strong Saturday night, but The Moore brothers of Sparta had to battle with Spartan Jason Bolster. Adam Moore won out in the end over Bolster, as Andy Moore trailed behind in third. Every car except one was from Sparta.

Dash — 1, Adam Moore

Heat 1 — 1, Harley Jankowski

Heat 2 — 1, Brad Warthan

35 Hornets raced Saturday night with Jeff Stumlin and dirt track racer John Radtke each taking home Hornet features.

Heat 1 — 1, David Treu Jr.

Heat 2 — 1, Jeff Thompson

Heat 3 — 1, Garrett Thicke

Chris Sampson and Nate Towner won a pair of “Second over the line wins” Hornet novelty races.

It looks as though, so far, the Goodyear tires that the Sportsmen will have to run this year really didn't give anyone any problems. Qualifying times looked pretty good with everyone laying down practically the same times on lap 1. A week off from La Crosse now. Dirt track racing SHOULD get underway Friday night at Mississippi Thunder Speedway in Fountain City. Car counts sound like they will be great this year, the fifth under the helm of Bob Timm.

The Chase Begins!

As we say goodbye to 2012, the local racing community remains strong. Despite significant downturns in other forms of racing and economy in general, most things seem just fine as we get ready to turn the page to 2013. Both at the La Crosse Speedway and the Mississippi Thunder Speedway. But to continue the trend of keeping these local tracks open, it all starts with you.

Westby, Arcadia, Black River Falls and up until late last year, Tomah. All closed or are on the border. Why? It could be a number of things. Owners ran out of funding, low car counts, rising operating costs. And.....empty grandstands. Hard, as a race fan, to contribute to a lot of those reasons......but the grandstands are all you.

I applaude Chuck Deery at the La Crosse Speedway and Bob Timm at the Mississippi Thunder Speedway for things they have and are doing to give fans a chance to watch great racing at an affordable price. Family ticket plans, buck nights for food and drink and affordable apparel.

So as you head to your local tracks this year, don't think about what's it's going to cost you. Think about what you have saved and what you ARE saving. Another local race track.
