It Only Takes One

A Kentucky man who scammed more than $11,000 in cash, goods and perks from a kindhearted Fox Valley race car driver last month is in jail after he raised suspicions by trying the scam again.

That was the story this week which outraged probably every race fan, team and driver in the state. More on the story??

Robert Dougherty contacted a Fox Valley race car driver last month and requested an autographed picture. As they talked, Dougherty said the family moved from Wisconsin to Kentucky so his son could get care for thyroid cancer. Medical bills were starting to stack and the boy had just two months to live. The driver and his wife offered a trip to the family. They paid for a van rental, arranged a three-day hotel stay and brought the family to a race. Fans contributed to the boy’s cause. But when Dougherty contacted a North Carolina race driver with the same story, he raised suspicions. Police in Kentucky were able to determine the boy didn’t have cancer.

Now I know where the track where this took place in Wisconsin and I know many, many people that contributed towards what they thought was a great cause. Yes there are many angry and hurt people today that thought they were helping.

BUT. It got me thinking. I have seen this generosity from race fans and teams that I have worked at for years. From the Gering Speedway in Nebraska to the Knoxville Speedway in Iowa to the La Crosse Speedway. People will give when they think it is needed and give they do! So, while most people want this guy eliminated from the face of the earth, remember folks. He will get his. You go on and you keep giving yours.
