I'm sure you remember the "Kearns Korner" column the La Crescent student newspaper in 1969 right? I know I still have copies framed at home hanging on the wall. What insight! Well it's back in Blog form. I love high school and college sports and may put a thought or two down on games coming up, or some we may have already broadcast. And yes, I still look the same as the picture above.
Our first high school girls broadcast is Tuesday night with Aquinas at Logan. Two good teams. Aquinas is off to a great start, unbeaten at this point. The Eagle women host St. Mary's of Winona Wednesday night and need a win badly. They have struggled with injuries and are playing a lot if freshman. Who was it that said "the best thing about freshmen is they become sophomores!" The Onalaska boys are at Logan Thursday night, the Hilltoppers and Matt Thomas have looked unstoppable so far. Players like Matt don't come along very often, so get out and see some games. The Uwl men won two over the weekend and are 8-1. If you saw the Whitewater game you may have been disappointed, so were the Eagles. They are a good team and it would be worth you while to catch them again, or for the first time. It seems to me the Pack is getting it done with smoke and mirrors, but they are winning. For the way they started, having a chance to clinch the division with a win over the Bears next Sunday is quite an accomplishment especially with all the injuries they have had. Hope to see you at a High School or College game soon!
Holmen jumped out to an early 9-2 lead, but the Onalaska boys roared back to take a three point halftime lead and pulled away late to hand the Vikings their first loss of the season 63-48. Onalaska is 2-0 and Holmen now 4-1. It was Matt Thomas again leading Onalaska with 32 points. He is averaging 34.5 points over the first two games. He is worth the price of admission! Get to a Hilltopper game and you won't be disappointed. Tonite (Wed) I am in River Falls for a doubleheader as the Viterbo men and women visit Karges Center. Women at 6:00 and the mens game at 8:00. Scott Erickson will remain in La Crosse and do live updates on the Whitewater at Uwl mens game. Both are unbeaten and Whitewater is ranked second in the country in division three. Should be a good one. The Eagle men have been playing great and it would be well worth your while to take this one in. It starts at 7:00 at Mitchell Hall. The Eagle women are at Whitewater and we'll have up to date scores on that game as well.
Matt Thomas looked all world in a season opening win vs. Eau Claire Memorial. He had 37 points and only played a minute or two of the fourth quarter. Onalaska will host Holmen Dec. 4 at 7:30. Both teams are undefeated and had two close games a year ago. The Uwl men are 1-0 in the WIAC and 6-0 onthe season after a conference opening win at Eau Claire. The men host UW Whitewater Dec. 5 at Mitchell Hall. Whitewater is ranked third in the country in division three and is the team to beat in the conference. The Eagles are a fun team to watch. They hit 10 of 13 threes in the second half at EC. Well worth your time to catch that game Wed. at Mitchell Hall.
Martin Luther is at Viterbo Wednesday night for a college doubleheader. The women at 5:30 and the men at 7:30. Tuesday night in Wisconsin Rapids the Blugolds escaped with a 52-50 overtime win, and didn't play very well. Wisconsin recruit Bronson Koenig was on the bench for the second straight game. He was eligible to play, but did not because of coaches decision. The Blugolds will be better with him, but the way things are shaping up in the mvc, everbody will need to improve. Central opened with a win at Eau Claire north, Logan is 1-0, Holmen is 3-0 and you Know Onalaska is going to be good with Matt Thomas. Should be a fun year.
Looking forward to our first real busy week of College and High School Basketball. Seven games in five days here on WKTY. Our first look at Aquinas tonite at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln and the first game for Badger recruit Bronson Koenig who sat out the first game, a loss to Wisconsin Dells. College Double headers Wednesday with Martin Luther men and women at Viterbo and Saturday with the Uwl men and women at UWEC. Thursday night we get our first look at Onalaska as they host Eau Claire Memorial with division one Iowa State recruit Matt Thomas seeing his first action. Friday we'll get a look at Todd Fergot's Central Red Raiders as they host Wisconsin Rapids, and of course the Packers and the Vikings on Sunday. For the 11th straight year I will not be watching that match up. Go Pack!
