New Race Report Coming

Yes Winter is here, but stock car drivers are busy working in their shops either tearing down and putting back together race cars or are wheeling and dealing for a new car or truck to race in 2014. Where to race is the big question for some come 2014, and the new "John's Bay Race Update" with Dan Deicher will hopefully guide you along to filling in that schedule.

The minute and a half program will air Thursday's starting December 5th during the Sports Exchange Show at 5pm. The program will run until late March, when the "Mississippi Thunder Race Report" with Dan Deicher begins. That show will again air starting in March on Saturday's from 1p-2p on 580 WKTY.

If it happens in the area, and it pertains to racing, Dan Deicher has you covered with the new "John's Bay Race Update" on 580 WKTY and

Another Race Season Here And Gone

2013......a year in the local racing world that some will look back upon and smile and cry. Champions were crowned, rookies raced through the year to take that "stripe" off their cars and for some drivers....trying to find a new home will be discussed when the snow flies. Here's a breakdown of the local track scene and where things could go in 2014.

La Crosse Speedway:

Late Models: Champion Steve Carlson. 2nd at La Crosse and first since 2007. He also finished 17th in national NASCAR Whelen All American Series points. Also Wisconsin NASCAR Champ.

Rookie Of The Year: Brandon Berg.

Wisconsin NASCAR Late Model Rookie Of The Year: Matt Inglett

Sportsmen: Champion Jake Arneson, first ever.

Rookie Of The Year: Jeff Thompson who also finished 3rd in Hornet points.

Thunderstocks: Champion Adam Moore to go with his track leading 6 feature wins. His second track championship at La Crosse.

Rookie Of The Year: J.R.Tourtelott

Hornet Champ: Jake Bemis

2014? Will the Thunderstocks stay around? More Hornet races? How many new Late Models and Sportsmen will they see?

Mississippi Thunder Speedway:

Street Stocks: Champion Doug Wojcik to go with his 8 feature wins.

Super Stocks: Champion Tommy Richards.

USRA Modifieds: Champion Josh Angst. His first since 2010.

USRA B-Modifieds: Champion Jacob Blees. That goes with his 5 feature wins this year.

Pure Stocks: Champion Bobby Fort Jr.

600 Modifieds: Champion Don Werner

A Mini Modifieds: Champion Alex Stevens

B Mini Modifieds: Champion Matt LaDuke

2014? What does the future hold for the Pure Stocks? Can the track maintain an average of 24 USRA B-Mod's? Are the 600 Mod's "the new class"?

Raceway Park, Shakopee, MN. Long gone...but not forgotten. The track witnessed it's last race this year after 56 years, leaving some drivers to call it quits on their careers and others scrambling to see where they can race next year. Give those folks credit....they tried as hard as they could to save the track this year....just didn't happen.

So all in all....I announced at two great tracks...met some new race fans and drivers...and once again, don't know why, will be the Facebook rumor mill central during the winter.

I also want to thank Bob Timm at MTS for sponsoring my radio and TV show this year and Chuck Deery for the great prizes I gave away this year. Working for those two gentleman has been, again, outstanding and I look forward to lending my voice to both tracks again next year.

See you at the banquets!

Winding Down To Championships

Ready for the 44th Annual Oktoberfest Race Weekend? I am too like you don't know!!! But there are quite a few races left at other tracks as we wind down to the La Crosse Speedway.
For instance, Elko Speedway has the ARCA Midwest Tour for the Thunderstruck 93 on Friday and Saturday, Deer Creek Speedway has its Fall Jamboree today through Saturday and the Dells Raceway Park has its 2nd annual September Showdown on Friday and Saturday.'s the Short Track Nationals at Rockford Speedway.'s Fest time.
I would encourage you to travel over the next two weeks and attend a race at a track you've never been too. I have had a chance to hit Raceway Park and Slinger this year, something I have not had the chance to do in years. Points battles are still out there. Drivers still have scores to settle with opposing drivers. And it all comes back to La Crosse where the crowns will be handed out left and right. Show area tracks your support and thank them for providing you a venue.
The best in the Midwest, and Canada (Greg Van Gool who will carry the colors of his native Saskatchewan) will be here in two weeks, racing for four straight days. I hope to see you at the track or in the campgrounds. And when it's all said and done for the year.......we thank you in advance....advance of the 2014 race season.

The Fans Do It Again

Most people know I announce at two different race is dirt and the other asphalt. Two different sets of race fans, stock cars and of course surfaces. Most people also know the economy has taken it's toll on the sport of local racing as well. And technology, everyone has Ipads, cell phones and computers and gaming is huge. From car counts to purses to fans in the stands, things are not how they used to be.

There has been a huge push in Minnesota as race fans there are not trying to save their favorite track from closing. No, they are trying to enjoy the last days of Raceway Park in Shakopee being open. It was announced this year, that an asphalt recycling plant will be built where the track now stands. The last checkered flag will fly over the track on September 1st.

This past weekend a concerted effort was put together to try and break the track's all time attendance record of around 3,200. I hear the number was close to 3,000. Cudo's to each and every driver and fan that showed up. That is simply outstanding. Some folks had not been to that track in 15 years or more for one reason or another. They were there this weekend. One last shout, one last popcorn and one last time for some to watch a driver they had not seen in years. What a way to support your local track! The future? Who knows. Hopefully racing will not leave the hearts and minds of those that are at Raceway Park now. They, the drivers, were the ones trying to garner support to pack the stands. Again, cudo's!

As for The Mississippi Thunder Speedway and La Crosse Speedway? Wow. What a weekend. Both tracks had outstanding fan bases. MTS was a circus. Balloon makers, giveaways, flying frisbees and flying dirt. What a recipe for a Friday night. And La Crosse. I heard from fans that had not been to the track in years that were thrilled by the racing, the food and Trailer Race of Destruction. I think there will be some extra Oktoberfest tickets sold this year for that premiere racing event coming in 2 months.

In closing, you, the fans, should be congratulated for getting to that local track and supporting a sport enjoyed by those 5 to 60. I keep getting the vision of the track in Black River Falls. A picture taken by Kenny Hutchins. What once was a track that saw many, many miles of tires put down on it is now covered in weeds. Raceway Park.......we can't stop what's going on there. Other local tracks? Yes, we can. Keep showing up! And keep racing!
