La Crosse Speedway 2014 Schedule Announced!

Officials from LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway today announced details of its 2014 event schedule.

"Fans and race teams should be as excited about this season as we are," commented Speedway President Gregg McKarns, hinting about some of the things planned for the 2014 season.  "Race fans every year are treated to some of best short track racing in the country.  The divisons that race weekly, as well as those that race on a limited schedule each are unique in their appearance and style of racing.  That brings a variety of flavors for the fans at every event," continued McKarns.

"The weekly racing menu will consist of the traditional divisions, the Late Models, Sportsmen, and Thunderstox.  But each week will mix in a different side dish.  An additional division or divisions, including the Hornets, Outlawz, Figure-8, or our new division, the Street Stocks, will give fans an extra thrill."

The Street Stocks are the newest class of cars, built similar to the small Hornet class. They are larger, six cylinder cars, strictly OEM stock, with a minimum 106 inch wheelbase.

"Short tracks are well known not only for putting on a great racing program, but entertainment show as well," continued McKarns.   "And this year will be no different, as fans will get to see Trailer Races, T-Bone Crashes, a race with the lights off, and fireworks, for example on the dessert menu this year," concluded McKarns.

LaCrosse Speedway will for the 26th consecutive season be a part of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series. The first race of the season will take place for the first time under afternoon sunny skies, on Sunday, April 27th, as Budweiser presents the "Frostbuster" event.  Weekly racing will begin on Saturday nights starting May 17th and will run through August 23rd.

The NASCAR Late Models will run double feature nights three times this season, having two 20 lap races on the same night.  The first one will be May 31st, the second during the LaCrosse Interstate Fair on July 19th, and the third will be on "The Fantastic Five" night, August 16th.  The Fantastic Five will feature five 20 lap features, consisting of two for Late Models, two for Mid-American Stock Cars, and one for the Sportsmen division.

Other key dates on the 2014 schedule include the Smash-O-Rama on Saturday, June 14th, a full racing program on Thursday night July 3rd with Fireworks, the Eve of Destruction on September 6th, and the 45th Oktoberfest will conclude the season October 2nd through 5th.

In addition to the oval racing will be the popular "Street Drags," on Friday nights.  The Street Drags is entering its eighth consecutive season, and will take place the second Friday night of the month starting in May, and ending in September. Plus, additional events will take place on Friday, July 18th during the Interstate Fair and the Speedway's final event of 2014, the 300' Bracket Nationals on Saturday, October 11th.

RIP "Trunk Monkey" Kaleb Miller

The racing community has lost a family member. 24 year old Kaleb “Trunk Monkey” Miller went to the best race track in the world this week, this after a bad snowmobile accident last weekend. Surrounded by family and friends, Kaleb left us Wednesday with two images that will last forever. His heart and smile.

I only knew Kaleb and his family for 8 years, but they were a close 8 years. I went to grade school with momma, Denise.

Kaleb and his brothers Dakota and Brad Warthan, followed in the footsteps of their father BIlly, racing and making names for themeselves through western Wisconsin. Dakota "The Kid" raced Thunderstocks and did stunts and while his brother, "Bad" Brad Warthan, who ran Thunderstocks, will try his luck at the rookie of the year title in the Sportsmen class at the La Crosse Speedway in 2014. Billy ran for years at the Sparta/Tomah Speedway and the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway. Kaleb ran door to door with and against both brothers for over 10 years locally in the Hornet and Thunderstocks divisions. Brothers off the track, competitors on. Billy, past track champion and wife, Denise, always "on the hill" rooting their sons to victory. And BIlly of course always showing me his favorite beer of choice down below while I was stuck with a trusty bottle of water. Denise always blowing me a kiss before the races started.

Racing nicknames don't mean a whole lot to some, but to Kaleb, the name "Trunk Monkey" was not only a fan favorite, but his favorite. About 4 years ago during a roll over competition, Kaleb had rolled a car onto it's roof, crushing it so bad that he couldn't get out. After several minutes of track safety crews thinking safety first, Dakota came running through the pits to the crumpled car. He smashed out the back window and pulled Kaleb out, somewhat through the trunk of the car. When I knew everyone was safe, I announced to the crowd....." And here folks is the Trunk Monkey, Kaleb Miller." I think, while at the hospital with his family and friends, I heard that name used more then his REAL name.

Kaleb, was loved in the pits as names like Critter ( Chris Sampson), The Joker ( Harley Jankowski), Double 8 (David Cavin) and others were always around the famed 08 cars. Never an argument, that I saw, just friends helping friends do what they loved. And beer of course, Lot's of beer. Miller High Life.

As we get set for another exciting race season at the La Crosse Speedway, The Trunk Monkey pitstall will still be there. Another driver parked in it. Friends all around. No matter what kind of car it is, what division it is and what number it is, the 08 will always be parked there. With Dakota, Brad, drivers and family always knowing that spot.

So when you walk in the pits this year, smile. Smile at the Trunk Monkey. Because I know damn well, he will be smiling at you. He always did. And he always will. Smile. - Dan Deicher La Crosse Speedway Track Announcer
