Holmen, Logan impress again

Kyle Bakalars put the game away, but what happened after may have put the season away.

The Logan High School senior had touchdown runs of 65 and 79 yards to give his team a commanding 35-point lead. On defense, right after the second score however, Rangers quarterback (and linebacker), Johnny Kind, injured his left ankle and did not return.

He was not seen walking after the game, either.

And there will be no rest for undefeated Logan (5-0, 3-0), which heads to unbeaten Holmen on Friday for what should decide the Mississippi Valley Conference.

Bakalars finished with 190 yards on just 11 carries, while teammate Aric Elmore had 10 carries for 57 yards rushing, 2 receptions for 29 yards and, with 7:10 remaining in the game, the senior returned an interception 82 yards for a touchdown – his ninth of the season.

HOLMEN 35, WEST SALEM 0

Two teams came in unbeaten, but one team left very beaten.

Holmen put up 418 yards of offense and held the Panthers to just 88.

Camryn Zimmerman had three first-half touchdowns (61, 38 and 49 yards), giving the senior 11 touchdowns before halftime in the last three games. He finished with 16 carries for 259 yards, while teammate Mitch Dienger had 17 rushes for 85 yards and one TD. Seth Wilson carried just once, but he bulldozed his way to a 19-yard score early in the fourth quarter.

The Vikings (5-0, 3-0) now have two shutouts to their resume and have outscored opponents 144-0 the last four games. West Salem (3-1, 2-1) came in averaging 30 points a game.

ONALASKA 41, SPARTA 20

The story of the night was Alex Gumz. Then again, it could have been the Nate Sweeney-Ryan Williams connection.

Gumz, Onalaska’s halfback, had 41 carries for 341 yards and two touchdowns. All Sweeney and Williams did was hook up for three touchdowns.

Those two hooked up early in the first quarter, but Sparta’s Noah Schauf replied with an 87-yard kick return for a score to give his team the lead. The Spartans (1-4, 1-1) never led again.

Onalaska answered with a Gumz touchdown followed by the Sweeney-Williams connection before halftime.

Matt Hampel pulled Sparta within 20-13, but, in reverse order this time, Sweeney-Williams hooked up again, followed by Gumz’s final score.

Onalaska (2-3, 2-1) outgained Sparta 589 yards to 214.

CENTRAL 36, AQUINAS 12

Waylon Alvarado had two rushing touchdowns and threw another in leading Central to its first win of the season.

Alvarado’s 50-yard strike to Matt Sorenson gave the Red Raiders (1-4, 1-2) a 21-0 lead early in the third quarter.

Andrew Olson put the Blugolds on the board with a 10-yard score, but Alvarado answered with a 17-yard touchdown of his own to put things well out of reach.

Central, which overcame four fumbles, outgained Aquinas (1-4, 0-3) 402 to 130. The Blugolds had negative-20 yards rushing.
